ParrotsNow News, Issue #07 -- Time, like a bird, flies April 06, 2004 |
| Hello April 6, 2004 Issue #7 OK, it's been a while since I've gotten the newsletter out. It's been a busy, but exciting time though. You'll see some of the new additions to ParrotsNow.com below. I think I've said it before, but I really will try to get this out at least once a month. Let us know if you'd like to see more of something - here or on the site - less of something, or something completely new. Much of the joy in ParrotsNow is the emails we receive. A lot of the time is spent in answering questions sent in to us. We'll be adding a page with helpful hints and tips, based on the questions we receive.... One of the things we haven't gotten done yet :-( but it's coming :-) We DO have a lot more pictures (not all) added to the site. If yours still isn't there, assuming you've sent one in, drop us a quick email to remind us. We've also built a good additional inventory of new bird toys and supplies, although many of those aren't yet added. At any rate, hope you like this issue of ParrotsNow News!
Enjoy,

1. A New Addition....by A'Lona
In the last newsletter we said we would tell you about the new addition to our family.
In November we brought home our sweet Addy bird, a Goffin's Cockatoo. Addy is 10 years old and has had one previous owner. The woman who had Addy also has two macaws and two monkeys. One monkey has allergies so she chose to find homes for Addy and her macaws.... We were lucky enough to get Addy. Knowing that the husband or children had never handled Addy, we knew that it would be a challenge, not only for us but for him also. It took some time but Addy has warmed up to us both, myself more than Jim. (Remember a woman only had handled Addy). Now Addy has been more than patient with Jim, and is really trying to get used to having a man handle him. He does bite Jim now and then (Jim's fingers are starting to heal ;-)) but usually will stepup without a problem. As for me, Addy has been great. One of our site visitors wrote in with a similar problem - her bird didn’t like men. We’ll be posting our answer about that on the site soon. We were informed that Addy is a feather picker, mostly during molting. He will pick till he is bare. Now he hasn't since we brought him home and hope he never does. He has gotten almost all his feathers back, and still has a bare spot on his chest but seems to be filling in nicely. The one problem we are having is that we have been unsuccessful in finding any toys Addy will play with. And if we try something new he is very afraid of it. He also does not like to sit on a perch outside of his cage. If he is out of his cage, one of us has to hold him. We are working on these two problems and hope to have a success story for you in our next newsletter. In writing this, we hope to inspire you all to have patience. It has been 5 months since we brought Addy home, and he still has a few issues with us, but we have come a long way together. Addy has shown us just how wonderful, sweet and totally silly he can be, and every day we learn new things about him. We’ve come to love his unique “Goffin’s voice.”
Addy has made a wonderful 4th addition to our family, we are so very happy he allowed us to bring him into our family.
